Pip (forex)
A pip is the standard unit of price change in forex: 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on yen pairs. The cash value of a pip depends on the volume, the contract size and the account currency. Run this calculation now: pip value calculator
Pip, pipette and point
The fourth decimal in EURUSD is a pip; the fifth, which most platforms display, is a pipette (a tenth of a pip). On JPY pairs the pip is the second decimal. 'Point' is what platforms call the minimum tick, and it does not always match a pip — on an index CFD, a point is the whole unit.
Mixing up pip and pipette is the most common factor-of-10 error in stop calculation: a 30-pipette stop is a 3-pip stop.
From pips to cash
Pip value = units per lot × pip size × lots, in the quote currency; then converted to the account currency. On EURUSD, 1 lot is worth 10 dollars per pip. On USDJPY at 150, 1 lot is worth 1,000 yen per pip, or 6.67 dollars.
A trade's risk is stop in pips × pip value. Without the second factor, the stop is just a number on the chart.
